The Freedom Riders were civil rights activists that rode interstate buses into the segregated southern United States in hopes of trying to eradicate racial discrimination. They left Washington, D.C. on May 4, 1961 and were scheduled to arrive in New Orleans on May 17. They faced horrific challenges, but the Freedom Rides established great credibility with Blacks and Whites throughout the United States forming the backbone of the civil rights movement. Connections # 1228: Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom’s Cabin was the best selling novel of the 19th century. It was credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1950s. It depicted the reality of slavery while asserting that love can overcome something as destructive as enslavement of fellow human beings. It also played a role in the start of the Civil War. CONNECTIONS uncovers the impact that Uncle Tom’s Cabin played in being an agent of social change.
