Program: "Carolina Stories: The Education of Harvey Gantt"
Episode(s):Carolina Stories: The Education of Harvey Gantt
Production Date(s):2013
Synopsis:South Carolina fought the desegregation of its schools longer than any other state, even after the passage of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. But a determined effort to enforce Brown, spearheaded by the NAACP, prevailed, and in January 1963 the Fourth Circuit Court ordered Clemson College to admit Harvey Gantt, a young African-American man from Charleston. January 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the integration of Clemson, and SCETV, in partnership with the ETV Endowment, will commemorate this historic anniversary through a documentary entitled The Education of Harvey Gantt. The documentary will air statewide on SCETV and will be offered for national broadcast to all PBS stations, bringing the story of this seminal episode in civil rights history to a public television audience. It will also be featured in a Civil Rights and Social Justice Youth Transmedia Summit to be held at SCETV in February 2013. The program is narrated by Tony Award-winning actress and singer Phylicia Rashad and features historic civil rights photographs by Cecil Williams.
