Synopsis:In the heart of the South Carolina Sea Islands is one of the state’s most significant historical institutions. The Penn School was begun in 1862 as a program to educate Sea Island slaves freed at the beginning of the Civil War. Now the Penn Center, at the heart of Gullah culture, is 50 acres containing Brick Church, Darrah Hall, old burial grounds, a nature trail, Chowan Creek, Gantt Cottage, and acres of native flora and fauna. The Penn Center: A Legacy of Change tells the story of its inception as a school through its involvement in the Gullah community today.
