One Third of a Nation
At his 1933 inauguration, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared, "I see one third of the nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished." Most of that one third was below the Mason-Dixon line. This documentary features more than 400 photos from the Library of Congress collection, imaginative video camerawork and rare film footage to create the grim feeling of that time. Haunting, authentic songs deepen the impact. Narrator James Dickey comments that One Third of a Nation reveals "pieces of people's lives." This is history as intimate and personal as a family album.

One World: Baltics
Follow the Baltic people of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia in the fall of 1995, during the long-awaited Russian troop withdrawal after a long, bitter occupation. The Soviet Union had collapsed, and World War II was finally over for the Baltics. Their “singing revolution” was considered a peaceful success. Experience the two years of hardship that followed. Reformers and romanitcs filled the offices of government, many of them voted out in favor of those with experience. The dream of reform, efficiency, prosperity and free markets awaits a change from the old “business as usual.” Some still sense the dark cloud left by half a century of spies, informers, deportations and fear. But to many in the west, the Baltic countries are considered the most successful former Soviet Republics.

This program marks the 50th anniversary of Indian independence by reintroducing this mystical land to the world. Visit the Taj Mahal, and see images of nuclear power plants and space and computer industries—all part of the world's largest democracy.

It has a booming electronics industry and a yearly economic growth rate of nearly 10 percent. It is no accident that, today, two of the five largest shopping malls in the world are in Bangkok. Get an insider's look at centuries-old rites never before filmed.ed.

One World: Turkey
See and feel the origins of modern Turkey in the Great Ottoman Empire, which ruled from 1453 to the end of World War I. See how the revered leader Kemal Ataturk took his country through the struggle for independence into a 20th-century society and revived the economy and morale through radical change—from the introduction of the Latin alphabet to educational reform. Turkey is politically and economically a rising nation. It promises to play a pivotal role in relations between the newly independent nations of the former USSR to the east and the Muslim world to the south. Viewers are reminded of the strategic role Turkey has played for more than half a century—and the importance of its role in the future.
