Connections: Gullah Culture (Show #816)
When Africans were forcibly brought to this country beginning in the 1600s, many came through ports located in places like St. Helena Island. Those that remained there for varied reasons were able to retain some of what they brought with them, culture, traditions, even speech patterns. Those semblances of Africa were mixed and mingled with this new life, and out of that Gullah was born.
